Anthropology is the broadly interdisciplinary study of humankind from its earliest origins to the present. Anthropologists employ a stunning diversity of methods, theories, and approaches in their efforts to understand our common humanity, and together, they represent a wide diversity of intellectual traditions. Anthropology is composed of four major branches: social or cultural anthropology, archaeology, biological anthropology, and linguistic anthropology, and each has numerous sub-disciplines and thematic areas. Applied anthropology, although it has its origins in social anthropology, emerged as a distinctive subfield by the 1950s, and because it is focused on practice, its scholars may come from any of the four traditional branches. As a centralized digital resource, the OREA will aim not only to organize the field but will also facilitate better communication between the many communities that define it. Working in combination with the Oxford Handbooks and Companions on topics related to anthropology, as well as the Oxford Bibliographies in Anthropology, the OREA aims to provide an authoritative guide to both traditional practices and newly emerging traditions that will benefit not only students, but also scholars and researchers in its diverse sub-disciplines. The OREA will be a source of foundational encyclopedic information to new scholars just joining the field, as well as to established scholars and practitioners expanding their research beyond their immediate area of study
