Critical ethnography developed from poststructuralist critiques of ethnography and from engagement with critical theory within anthropology. These engagements produced a succession of feminist, postcolonial, self‐reflexive, and embodied critical ethnographies that challenged both notions of objective science and also the imperialist foundations of the discipline of anthropology. As this crisis of representation unfolded, critical ethnographies began to engage new methodological, philosophical, hermeneutical, and political questions, ideas, and practices
