The old provincial assemblies of the clergy of France are forgotten in our historiography. In the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, their duty was to prepare for the general assemblies and to select the deputies to represent each province in Paris. The assemblies of ‘second’ Aquitaine, which corresponded to the metropolitan province of Bordeaux, left archives which enable us to grasp the frame of mind of each session. While docile to royal injunctions until the 1740s, they expressed from the mid-century onwards, vigorous complaints in relation to the religious policy followed by the monarch, whether it concerned the Jansenist affaire, the trial of the Jesuits, the growth of bad books and irreligion, or the revival of Protestant temples
