This article reflects the qualitative, ethnographic research of authoritarian divisions exemplified by a case study in pubs of Leipzig, East Germany. Based on a relational conception of space (Massey, 1994), advantages and ambiguities of ethnographic research on spatial subjectivation and far-right tendencies are discussed. Centrally, the entanglement of research method and object of research is illuminated. Pubs in Leipzig’s inner East are contextualized as (exclusive) social spaces of political consolidation and prisms of urban restructuring and thus proposed as “strategically situated micro-situation[s]” (Sayer 2000, 151) for fine-grained analysis. Research experiences are reflected with regards to (difficult) access, ethical doubts, and moral dilemmas, both methodically and concerning their analytical value. This results in final work hypotheses on nested scales of spatio-temporal political subjectivation
