Filling the need for a timely and exhaustive bibliographical survey of the considerable wealth of materials on Ryukyu, both written and printed, this scholarly work covers about twelve hundred books and some eighteen hundred articles and monographs. Biographical sketches of noteworthy authors are included. Dr. Sakamaki describes the nature and scope of materials on Ryukyu in East Asian Languages, particularly in the social sciences and humanities. For most of the primary materials, and even for may of the secondary sources, he has provided annotated descriptions. The period he covers dates from earliest times to the summer of 1961
