The story of religion(s) in the world is extraordinarily complex and diverse. In this very brief essay, I comment on this complexity and diversity by discussing the way in which sub‐fields (many, many sub‐fields) have emerged in the study of the history of religion. By focusing on this development, I hope to demonstrate how the larger field has grown and expanded over the course of the last 50 years
