Based on a critical rereading of some of the most influential texts by Bolivian sociologist and politologist René Zavaleta Mercado, this article develops a conceptual assessment centered on two key notions in his work: self-determining democracy and the multitudinal form of the revolutionary subject. Engaging with Latin American Marxism, theories of hegemony, and contemporary debates on democracy beyond the electoral-procedural paradigm, these categories allow for a rethinking of politics as a historically situated collective practice. Against liberal conceptions of democracy and mechanistic readings of social classes, Zavaleta advances an expanded understanding of mass self-determination and revolutionary subjectivity, shaped by mediations, social memory, and structural heterogeneity. The article argues that these formulations anticipate current discussions on multitude, intersubjectivity, and counter-hegemony, and represent original contributions to political theory by articulating Latin American historical experience with universal critical reflection, offering analytical tools to grasp democratic struggles and processes of social transformation in peripheral contexts
