Although it has been pointed out that introduced and probably locally-made pottery coexist in Jomon sites, a solid scientific analysis of pottery movement as well as pottery production has hardly ever been attempted. The present research is a systematic provenance survey by petrological analysis of certain types of Jomon pottery in given temporal and spatial survey units in order to formulate patterns of pottery production and movement. As a result, two distinct types of pottery movement and production were recognized, and preliminary explanations could be given for the causes of inter-site pottery movement and their implications for sociocultural aspects of Jomon society
