This study provides a comprehensive assessment of Hg, As and Pb contamination in surface sediments of two rivers in Benguet, Philippines where mining is a primary industry and a potential source of heavy metals pollution in the rivers. Concentrations of Hg, As and Pb in river sediment samples were measured and assessed using single-element and multi-element indicators. Two points in each river were identified as highly contaminated while the other sites have low to moderate contamination and ecological risk. Multivariate analyses revealed the affinity of Hg and As to fine particles and the co-existential nature of Hg and As in the rivers, which suggests common anthropogenic source
