This investigation shows single and combined effects of Cd (0, 4, 8 and 12 mg kg‐1 soil), Cu (0, 40, 80 and 120 mg kg‐1 soil) and Ni (0, 10, 20 and 30 mg kg‐1 soil) on barley. When applied singly, Ni resulted in no reduction in yield, whereas the reduction in the yield of barley was 3 to 17% for Cd and 6 to 17% for Cu. When their highest doses were applied together, for Cd and Cu, the reduction in the yield was 14%; for Cu and Ni 23%; for Ni and Cd 15% and for all the three 34%. When these metals were applied in various combinations, their antagonistic and synergistic effects were reflected in their concentrations in barley and soil extraction with different chemical extractants
