Natural Resource Damage Assessment (NRDA) is the process of calculating the damages from releases of hazardous substances at one or more contaminated sites. In this paper the difference between “Superfund” remediation anal subsequent clean up, and clean up in the context of NRDA (restoration) is explained. After a review of the basics of NRDA economics, some cases for which the economics details are known are examined, at least to a degree. Though the veil of secrecy cloaking legal cases sometimes makes it difficult to learn details, a brief summary of some of the details on a few NRDA cases that have “concluded” in recent years allows a glimpse whether site‐specific damage estimates and settlement amounts seem to relate to contamination levels. Economics appears to be important in reaching these settlements, but whether settlement amounts relate strongly to contamination, or levels at particular sites, or more strongly to other factors cannot be seen from the limited information available at this time
