Mine clearance and soil restoration became a live issue after the Russian incursion into eastern Ukraine in 2014; more so since the outbreak of all-out war on 24 February 2022. We investigate the suitability of the land for agriculture following demining. Suitability for agriculture is severely diminished by the previous destruction and dispersal of topsoil, damage from heavy machinery, and remains of metals, chemicals, petroleum products, animals and people which also get into the groundwater. Although restoration of damaged lands is a long-term process, it can still be accomplished and the experience won helps to develop better procedures and recommendations for citizens engaged in farming or economic activities on shelled and mined land
