It is the hypothesis that the rate of occurrence of the intertrial response is an inverse function of the amount of warning signal in an aversive situation in a shuttle box. In addition, the experiment attempts to determine the extinction phase of intertrial response with the restraint procedure. 3 groups of 15 rats each, were given avoidance training with 100, 50 and 0 percent pairings of warning signal with UCS every 60 sec. Immediately after the acquisition, 0, 5 and 25 min restraint periods were differentially inserted in 3 subgroups and followed by the ordinary extinction. The results confirmed the hypothesis and the intertrial response was more easily influenced by the rest effect than was the avoidance response
