The present issue represents a departure for this journal, in that it is largely devoted to one substantial monograph. The same thing will be done in the future when opportunity offers. There will also be special issues dealing in their entirety with particular topics - for example, foreign area studies or linguistics and folklore studies. As is the general practice in Soviet Sociology, the references to unpublished sources (archive materials, field notes, etc.) are replaced by asterisks. The "labor-days" referred to in the Vishniauskaite article are units of labor used until recently on all Soviet collective farms. They were compensated at a fixed rate in cash and kind, but the rate might vary from farm to farm, and from one year to the next. The labor-day has now been replaced in many places by a guaranteed annual wage — Editor
