The basic idea of the history of science is to determine the objective logic of acquisition of the scientific knowledge that underlies many problems, aims, theoretical concepts, and research results in different sciences that, at first glance, seem unconnected. We think such work has now become absolutely necessary for psychology. The absence in psychology of a generally accepted conceptual and terminological framework, the rather crude state of development of the principles of a systemic approach, and the presence of a multitude of schools, currents, or directions hinder complete generalization of the accumulated factual data and prevent us from seeing that many findings that appear to be different and unconnected with one another actually form a unified whole or fall into a number of quite large "blocs." The purpose of the present study is to demonstrate this on the basis of a fragment of the history of the Institute of General and Pedagogical Psychology of the USSR Academy of Pedagogical Sciences
