Current interest in studying developmental changes in linguistic competence has led to intense interest in Russian among psycholinguists because of the importance of case structure in that language (Slobin, D. I. The acquisition of Russian as a native language. In F. Smith & G. A. Miller, Eds., The genesis of language: A psycholinguistic approach. Cambridge: MIT Press, 1968. Pp. 129-148; Soviet Psychology, Vol. VII, No. 3, Spring 1969 — special issue on psycholinguistics). The present contribution is concerned with a less thoroughly explored topic, the child's ability to reproduce the syllabic structure of the word. It appears from Markova's description that the child's ability to reproduce syllabic structure precedes his ability to reproduce its phonetic content accurately
