Biology long ago discovered empirically that two phenotypically identical structures or processes may be wholly dissimilar from a causal-dynamic perspective, i.e., in terms of their causes and their effects. Physics and, recently, biology have demonstrated that phenotypical similarity may go hand in hand with an extreme difference in causal-dynamic properties and that, conversely, there may be considerable phenotypical difference between two phenomena or processes that are causally and dynamically very much alike
