Communication, or social contact, is one of the chief concerns of social psychology. Interest in this subject stems from the extremely important role played by communication in the emergence and development of the personality. Through social contact and communication, both direct and mediated, through generations of experience embodied in the products of human culture, man acquires knowledge about the world about him, comes to know nature and the inner essence of social relationships, and assimilates cultural goods and the social values and norms elaborated by mankind in the course of its historical development. Describing social contact as the prime factor in the formation of the personality, Marx and Engels wrote: "The real spiritual wealth of the individual depends wholly on the richness of his real relationships." (1) Hence, a thorough and consistent study of man as a social being, i.e, the embodiment of that fundamental tenet of Marxism that sociohistorical circumstances determine the human mind, must be based on an analysis of all the varied relationships into which the individual enters with society and other people
