During the Middle Ages, knights with their lances ruled the battlefields. Though the lancer fighting style hails from the pre-Roman Iron Age, it took centuries to come to the fore in the Roman army. The following looks at the presence of lancers and their tactics in Hadrian's time, at about the mid-point of their rise to prominence. A good deal of the evidence comes from Hadrian 's speeches to the troops in North Africa
