In common with other Departments of Education, Exeter University, School of Education has had to come to terms with, and adapt to, the changed arrangements for in‐service provision which the new funding arrangements have brought since 1986. We believe that opportunities exist within the new settlement for a still closer focus on practice and for a more productive consultation between partners. In this paper we report on one carefully evaluated episode within a two year part‐time course (a residential weekend). This illustrates some not yet fully realised possibilities for opening up INSET and making the teacher‐researcher ever more responsive to the educational environment
