Rather, by exploring a few aspects of the question, it seeks to set the scene for the rest of this issue of RCL. The title is taken from Heinrich Boll's review of Václáv Hável's Letters to Olga reproduced in Václáv Hável or Living in Truth edited by J. Vladislav (London, 1986), pp. 204–212. Böll uses the term 'courtesy towards God' to refer to Hável's acute awareness of the spiritual dimension of life despite his inability to substitute the word 'God' for my 'something' or for the 'absolute horizon' (p. 206)
