The paper provides a detailed analysis of given names used by Jews on the terri¬ tory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (which roughly corresponds to modern Ukraine, Belorussia and Lithuania) during the 15th-16th centuries. The discussion is focused on the inventory of these names and its impact on historiography and philology. The onomastic material provides no corroboration for the common theory of the continuous presence of Jewish communities in that area. On the other hand, the analysis shows that numerous Jews arrived there during the discussed period from the West. Several names with Slavic roots borne by Lithuanian Jews attest the usage by local Jews of Slavic language in their vernacular life before the entire community switched to Yiddish. A special chapter deals with numerous Slavic suffixes present in given names of Lithuanian Jews and the origins of this phenomenon
