At the end of the 17th century, Jewish merchants appeared in Toulouse taking the place of the marranes. Then, they came more and more regularly in the city though they where not allowed to live there. They were tolerated by the local authorities (the parliament and the capitouls) but also by the provincial ones who dared flout the royal rules which wanted them out of the province. More and more present, the jews competed seriously with the local traders who multiplied lawsuits against them, all in vain. In the middle of the 1 8th century, the first Jews settled for good in Toulouse, only arousing the hostility of the other merchants. During the last decades of the Monarchy, a small fewish community flourished with a real care of integration into the Toulousian society
