The evolution of the Chasséen (Middle Neolithic) pottery of Southern France is not known, and dated stratified assemblages are lacking. An attempt to trace regional differences within the Chasséen wares by artifact cluster analysis (of forms and decorative traits) revealed three zones with well-defined pottery traditions. Size and retouch analysis of the flintwork revealed no such regional patterning, and this opposition may be due to different mobility of the respective pot and flint-tool makers
