Adopting a case study approach, this article examines the language practices of Francophone speakers of Latin American descent and their contribution to the dynamics of Montreal French. The research focus is on discourse features, and the analysis demonstrates that, far more than only indexical, the choice of variants among the linguistic repertoire highlights how the agency of the speakers is at play in the context of their oral performance. In addition, the analysis shows the complexity of the sociolinguistic situation in a North American metropolis and sheds light on the role of ethnicity as one of the many dimensions affecting language variation and speaker identity construction
