By creating in Le double suspect a character who is the reader in a first narrative and becomes the scriptor in a second, Madeleine Monette illustrates the scriptor-reader relationship, which is that of the self and the other. Here, the metatextual JEU enjoys free play, as does the JE of the narrators as each seeks her own language through that of the other. In "L'Américain et la Jarretière," the narrative opens and closes with two almost identical sentences, another kind of doubling and textual self-generation. The second of the sentences plays a parallel role to that of the second narrator in Le double suspect, and calls for a rereading/rewriting that necessarily produces a new dimension of the text
