In the second decade of the 20th century, Dorothy M. Richardson began to write Pilgrimage, the first stream-of-consciousness novel in the English language. Pilgrimage is a novel of female consciousness in which Richardson presented her psychological theory of gender. Her symbolic images representing the male and female are discussed. The secret garden is Richardson's metaphor for woman. This image is connected to childhood autobiography more generally. Richardson's image of the secret garden is not a nostalgic longing, but a source of optimism and creativity
