This article is a case study of a young child's extensive use of what is presumed to be a physical-psychological metaphor. The article includes detailed biographical data pertinent to the attribution of metaphor use. In addition, it suggests that even young children (preschoolers) can recognize the resemblance between the physical and psychological dimensions when this recognition is mediated by contextually rich circumstances. (Gardner & Winner, 1978, in fact reported this effect.) This article also offers some speculation as to how metaphor may aid in the comprehension of intrinsically difficult concepts
