The 8th International AIDS Conference/3rd World STD Congress underscored the need to control sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) as a means of preventing AIDS. Over the course of the AIDS pandemic severely affected countries have gained much insight into how to prevent HIV transmission. This knowledge however comes too late for many countries to usefully employ. Other countries still have time to take concerted action against the spread of HIV. Appropriate action would entail developing large-scale community interventions where needed. Unfortunately insufficient commitment and resolve appear forthcoming from the AIDS industry to focus upon that which is most directly effectively and economically supportive of AIDS prevention care and support. Conference presentations are cited in the areas of prevention other STDs care and support orphans nongovernmental organizations and development perspectives
