The psychological, social and environmental elements of divorce consist of change for everyone in the family. A child's adjustment to divorce depends not on the event itself, but how it's lived afterward. Behavior modeled by the parents will have an impact on the children's adjustment. There have been parenting-after-divorce training programs in the United States for nearly three decades. The content of the programs differs significantly. Some programs concentrate on education of the parents, counseling, bibliotherapy, and others utilize a model of both education and counseling. Regardless of the type of program or whether it's required or voluntary, behavior change theory should also be included in the counseling and educational curriculum. This concept gives parents the tools to continually self-evaluate their knowledge, desires and direction in their post-divorce relations with their ex-spouse. As well as having a positive effect on the children from the parental involvement, it may also have a positive effect on the children by learning how to use these tools for their own issues.
