their families and the communities they created, their relationships to the Jesuits and the Catholic Church, their struggles and aspirations for freedom, and the cruelty and suffering that was inflicted at the hands of their enslavers.The legacy of slavery is the final theme of the book.In his treatment of descendants, Gollar continues the stories of a number of the families we were introduced to earlier in the book, placing their experiences within the larger historical context of what was happening in the country and the U.S. Catholic community during the period following emancipation and bringing it to the present day with the response of descendants to the news that their ancestors were among the people sold by the Maryland Jesuits in 1838 to pay off the debts of Georgetown University.How the Jesuits have dealt with and portrayed their ties to slavery is reviewed by the author and ends with a discussion of current efforts underway to come to terms with this history and atone for their complicity in and profiting from trafficking in human lives.This book will be a welcome resource for instructors who wish to teach on the subject of the U.S. Catholic Church and slavery.Its real significance, however, is for what it represents to the future of this field.The sources and methods employed by the author as well as his openness and honesty when discussing
