In this contribution, made from perspective of the human right to water, we approach to the rural community of El Mirador, municipality of Zautla, state of Puebla, Mexico, in order to document the progress in the exercise of that right for the local population. Work has been done with the conjunction between qualitative and quantitative methods. The results indicate that the community lacks water access in their households and of the adequate availability of the vital liquid, for this reason, rainwater harvesting systems have been installed, in a participatory manner, with the intention of advancing in the resolution of this problematic situation. This work concludes by stating that the involvement of local actors strengthens their capacities and opens opportunities for the exercise of their human right to water
