In Indian arts, a deep interrelationship has existed between music (auditory art) and painting (visual art). Evidence of this connection can be found in the Chitrasutra of the Vishnudharmottara Purana, whose composition is generally dated to the 12th century. The text emphasizes that one must acquire knowledge of music before learning painting, as it enhances artistic expression and mastery in visual representation. This close association is also evident in the Ajanta School of Art, where various forms of music—singing, instrumental performance, and dance—are vividly depicted. Among these, dance is most prominently illustrated due to its strong visual nature, whereas singing and instrumental music, being primarily auditory, are less directly represented. The emergence of Ragamala Paintings, particularly in Gwalior, further demonstrates the synthesis of music and painting. These paintings are based on the emotional and aesthetic essence (rasa) generated by different musical scales and ragas. Another foundational element of Ragamala art is Raga Dhyana, which serves as a conceptual framework for visualizing musical modes. The tradition of depicting ragas and raginis in pictorial form evolved from these principles, resulting in a rich body of artistic work created by various artists. Ragamala paintings represent a harmonious fusion of poetry, music, and visual art, highlighting the mutual influence and interconnectedness of different artistic disciplines in Indian culture
