By taking into account the plurality of religions present in Italian schools, mainly linked to the phenomenon of migration, in this essay the first results of a qualitative analysis of the image of Muslims and Islām, as religion and culture, that emerges from some Italian religion textbooks for upper secondary school have been presented. The theoretical value framework is outlined in which such analyses can more effectively be performed. Moreover, attention has been given to the cultural and educational implications that textbooks have on students, especially in multicultural and multilingual classrooms. Although they cannot resolve political and social tensions between communities, teachers and educators play a central role in educating their students. Consequently, didactic materials, together with specific educational approaches and methodologies, can be crucial in promoting respect for diversity and mutual understanding
