The article deals with quite a widely spread category of inventory from the medieval sites of Western Siberia – lazurite pendants, which have been analyzed on the basis of historiographical approach and the use of mineralogical data. The analysis made it possible to expand the chronological framework of lazurite pendants, compared with the one taken by many other researchers, to identify the region where they were the most widely spread (the Ob regions around Barnaul-Biysk, Novosibirsk and Tomsk). The author proposes a hypothesis about cultural-diagnostic function of this category of inventory for the sites in Barnaul-Biysk, Novosibirsk and Tomsk Ob regions and in the Altai Republic. The pendants can be found in the sites belonging to the Basandaiskaya culture. Besides, lazurite pendants can serve as chronological indicators. In the area under consideration, they are dated by the 12th–13th centuries. Quite a common point of view about the nomadic belonging of the sites with that category of inventory has been refuted in the article. Analysis of the localization of the raw material base (lazurite deposits) led to suggestion that the pendants in the region, though called lazurite pendants, were made of another mineral, namely azurite. The article outlines prospects for further research
