This research focuses on nonverbal communications of the colonial building arrangement in the life of the native people in a tea plantation. The aim of this research is to explain the linkage between physical environment and the identity of the people who live in the vicinity such as the assumption of nonverbal communication theory. This research argues that physical environment has an effect on the identity of individuals who have lived in that area for generations. Information and data were obtained from field observation, in-depth interview, photo documentation, supported by documentations of historical physical artefacts from the Dutch colonialism era and photographs as well as articles about the history of the plantation. Data validation was performed using source triangulation technique, i.e. native people who understand the real building arrangement in the plantation area; they are the people who lived and interacted with the buildings in a long time. All of this are related to the theory of post-colonialism used in the communication studies. As an instrumental case study, the data analysis technique used in this research was by comparing the plantation area in Malabar and that in Subang. The result shows findings expected to give inputs about non-verbal communication studies, especially the building aspects as a physical environment appearance towards the workers life in the tea plantation, especially in relation to the postcolonial theory and identity of the local people
