The purpose of this research is to study organisational sustainability within NFs, to identify the characteristics of sustainable NFs and to provide an insight into how it might be developed. The research was undertaken by defining the characteristics of a sustainable NF using 18 interviews to generate a benchmark for organisational sustainability and then by investigating the development of 22 NFs in terms of their sustainability using the Readiness Assessment Tool (RAT) to audit their organisational sustainability. The research reveals that NFs under investigation are not developed enough to ensure organisational sustainability due to their limited resources and low levels of capabilities. This paper contributes to our understanding of the concept of organisational sustainability in developing sport systems and proposes areas where sport organisations can focus their efforts to improve organisational sustainability
