To date, few scholars have studied how elite athletes in non-Western countries choose sport as a profession and then go on to continue practicing their chosen sport in the international field in the context of the process of globalization, from an anthropological perspective. This study draws from The Anthropology of Sport and explores the rise of Lang Ping, the recently retired head coach of the Chinese Women’s volleyball team, in the world of competitive volleyball. We focus on her initial win of the title of world champion as a member of the Chinese team to her role as the coach of other volleyball world champions. We also explore how her double role as a female player and a Champion coach challenges the current gendered power relations in global sporting practice. The analysis indicates that Lang eventually established a sense of cross-border belonging and multi-cultural embeddedness in her self-cognition
