The rural settlement at La Pousaraque (Gignac-la-Nerthe) has middle-sized oil works (an oil-press house, two tanks, and probably two oil- presses) and other buildings around it which unfortunately are more or less destroyed by ploughing (pars urbana, hypocausts). This settlement existed from the very last end of the first century B. C. until the sixth century A.D. The oil-work was in operation as early as the first century A.D. with a rather low but stable output. Actually, besides a few changes from the end of the third century onwards, oil activity has been carried on during the whole time while it was occupied. La Pousaraque seemed to survive the third century « crisis », illustrating therefore as an archeological example, some fith century texts which mention olive groves and oil press-houses. The study of the fauna shows a large proportion of goats, which lead to believe that there was breeding activity on this settlement. These elements (olive-grove and goat-breeding) underline the original aspect of this settlement in the Marseilles hinterland, and lead to suppose that privileged economic activities existed with this city
