The Gallo-Roman city of Grenoble being located under today's old town, we cannot accurately analyze the physiognomy of Cularo. Some textual sources, the epigraphy as well as old and more recent interventions would indicate that Grenoble was a well-established city, endowed with public and religious buildings - regarding which we know very little -, a well-designed network of streets and tertiary activities (customs centre, pagus county town, for example). With a limited surface area (around 15 hectares), the antique town of Grenoble was therefore a well-equip- ped, middle-sized Gaul town
