Excavations have been conducted on the 2.5 Ha site of the gallo-roman villa of Vareilles, active from the first century B.C. to the early third century. This extensive operation revealed traces of oil and cereal culture, animal breeding and iron work. Unequaly distributed in time, their relative importance is not easy to establish. Particular interest is raised by the vine-growing activity of the villa, situated near the Hérault river and also close to a major road, in a small region with many examples of this speculative activity in the second and third centuries A.D. Four wine storehouses were revealed, which in the first half of the second century, could contain nearly 470 doliae. Perhaps the other products were partly or totally reserved for the life and activity of the villa
