Los antiguos griegos mostraron una gran sensibilidad hacia todos aquellos aspectos de la realidad que pudieran parecer asombrosos o fuera de lo común, un gusto por lo maravilloso que en época helenística fructificó en la aparición de las listas de noticias curiosas que conocemos con el nombre de paradoxografía. Las obras de los paradoxógrafos se han empleado a menudo como vía de conocimiento de obras perdidas, pero salvo casos aislados pocas veces han sido objeto de estudio por sí mismas, y menos aún como representantes de un género digno de tenerse en cuenta. El presente estudio busca colmar ese vacío con un análisis de las características, el público y la relación de la paradoxografía con otros géneros de la literatura antigua, a fin de concederle el lugar y la importancia que merece, y que a buen seguro permitirá una mejor comprensión de la literatura, la cultura y la sociedad del mundo antiguo.
