Provincializing SecularismsThis collection reckons with the growing certainty that nearly everywhere today, whether in Trump's Amer i ca, the unraveling Eu rope Union, the post-Arab Spring Middle East, or rising China, we are being ushered into tumultuous new po liti cal worlds whose markedly altered religious and secular vectors demand our critical attention. This book, however, does not seek a singular secular point of reference (the secular state, the immanent frame, a disenchanted world, or even a unified scholarly language) from whose perspective we might claim to mea sure or compare those changing vectors.Instead, it presumes that the secular vantage points of its international contributors are nonidentical.Secularism in its most general sense is worldliness (a claim we will elaborate), but diff er ent worlds beget diff er ent forms of worldliness. The hard work of translation across po liti cal worlds-with their distinctive historical situations, critical languages, and social agents-therefore guides this book's basic approach to the fluctuating global conditions of religion, secularism, and politics
