Introduction Following analysis of the fundamentals of the Spanish economy’s growth model and external insertion, this chapter examines the financial dynamics on which both have been sustained. This dynamic began with a process of overindebtedness in which expansion of the economy was rooted; this process created a high degree of financial vulnerability, caused by the outbreak of a private debt crisis that dragged the economy as a whole into recession. In this chapter, we also examine how this debt crisis and its implications have been managed. As we shall see, the imbalances that accrued in the financial sector of the economy during the expansionary period were the most obvious manifestation (consequence and cause) of the limits faced by the Spanish economy in terms of accumulation (as analyzed in Chapter 1), accentuated by the dependent nature of Spain’s external productive and commercial insertion (as explained in Chapter 2)
