This essays is a contribution to the sociology of space and the body, which still leads a shadowy existence in German-speaking countries. Spaces and bodies are seen as receptacles with a clear division between inside and outside — which is the starting point for other distinctions such as belonging/not belonging, familiar/strange, etc. These apparently unambiguous limitations of spatial bodies and physical spaces are severely being put into question by the processes of globalisation. This obvious trend is countered by the hypothesis that it is this process of dissolving divisions which is met by divisions being defended, spaces being closed off and new divisions being created on all kinds of levels
