This idea had been described by Mary Wollstonecraft as 'legal prostitution' in A Vindication of the Rights of Men (a, 23), and A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (b, 129, 218). The phrase 'legal prostitution' had previously been used by Defoe in Conjugal Lewdness; or, Matrimonial Whoredom (1727) (Wollstonecraft b, 129). It was a common enough concept by the 1890s
