This book is a sustained critical engagement with polemical passages in the Qur'ān and with interpretation of those passages by Muslim reformers of the twentieth century. The study focuses on five core issues: scriptural supersessionism; exclusive salvation; charges regarding the Jewish and Christian falsification of revelation; criticisms over divine sonship and the Trinity; and cautions or prohibitions regarding the taking of Jews and Christians as patrons, allies, or intimates. One of the main arguments put forth in this book is that modern Qur'ān commentaries (tafsīr) are a far richer and suppler exegetical discourse than has been assumed. It begins with a cogent reflection on various definitions of apologetic and polemic as relevant sacred texts and then articulates with precision and subtlety the concept of polemic that constitutes the focus of this study. It explores reformist tafsīrs with meticulous attention to argument, literary context, and rhetoric to illuminate the methods, positions, and horizons of the exegeses. It is a double process: a critical engagement with the tafsīrs and a lucid and original sounding of the Qur'ānic language, logic, and dilemmas within each of the five areas of contention as they are reflected in the reformist exegetical literature. The result is a work of conceptual sweep and sensitivity to the intricate detail of modern Qur'ānic exegesis. This book breaks new ground and should become standard work on Qur'ānic polemics and a valued contribution to a number of fields, including Qur'ān studies, the history of exegesis in Islam, and and the study of scriptural polemics within the Abrahamic traditions and more broadly within world religions
