This chapter reviews the literature on the anthropological contribution to the understanding of HIV/AIDS in Africa. It discusses HIV prevention campaigns, male circumcision, AIDS orphans, and the epidemiology of HIV transmission. It highlights the inadequate funding for anthropological research on HIV/AIDS and stresses the need for biological anthropologists to join with cultural anthropologists in order to facilitate a full comprehension of the nature of the HIV/AIDS epidemic
