Le territoire qui procède de l’établissement d’un lien privilégié entre un groupe et une portion d’espace, est un des éléments essentiels dans la production et la reproduction de l’espace des communautés africaines. Dans la logique traditionnelle, l’accès à la terre dépend des droits sur le territoire détenu par les autorités locales. Cette logique du territoire se voit confrontée à une logique capitaliste qui s’articule notamment autour de la notion de « mise en valeur ». La « mise en valeur » modifie fondamentalement le rapport des hommes à l’espace de la logique traditionnelle : en ne considérant l’espace que comme un ensemble de terrains à utiliser, elle remet en cause l’intégrité territoriale du groupe et les autorités traditionnelles
