Jean-Claude SCHMITT, Relics and Images The author investigates differences, analogies and mutual relationships between two material realities of the Christian cult, as regards their modalities of visualisation and 'presentification' (to make present) of the sacred. Images and relics have a function of memoria; they link up past and present, by calling to mind a saint's effigy, or by containing the remains of a saint's body. Both are supposed to have an actual virtus for the faithful. Their link is specially strong in the case of image-relics like the Volto Santo or the Vera leona. In the medieval West, the cult developed towards an intensification of the role of images representing invisible in a material shape
